Fright write returns in 2026

Now's a great time to start thinking about Frightwrite.  Soon it will be time to dust off your favorite keyboard and start writing!


Frightwrite is a short horror film screen writing competition. Your goal is to scare the pants off our judges with a screenplay 13 pages or less in length.

Here's an example of elements you could include in your screenplay.

1. Use a flashback to set up conflict.

2. Include a telephone audio message as voice over to forward storyline

3. A classic line from a classic horror film.

Registration usually closes on May 31 then it's due June 30th.

Here's the fine print

  • Include a famous horror film dialogue line in your screenplay.  Indicate the line with an underline and a footnote on the bottom of the page referencing the movie title and year of premiere.
  • The participant's agreement must be submitted with the screenplay.
  • The winning screenplay(s) will be posted on the Frightwrite website with the author(s) still retaining all rights.
  • By submitting your work to this competition, you agree to the rules and terms outlined in the rules and release agreement.  
  • While this is a horror screenplay contest, we will consider SciFi/Fantasy/Romance/Comedy/etc. concepts as long as they have the horror element.
  • Screenplays must be submitted as a PDF file only. (.fdr, .doc, .docx, .cltx, etc. will not be considered.)
  • Screenplays must not be any longer than 13 pages but can be as short as one page.  Here's how to format your screenplay.
  • Screenplays must be original; you must be the author of the script. However, you may submit a script written by more than one person provided that you're  one of the authors.
  • All screenplays must be submitted in English.
  • You may submit more than one screenplay, but you’ll need to pay a registration fee for each script.
  • All participants acknowledge that no offer or contract is being made to the  author (optioned, produced, purchase etc.) of the submitted work for  anything other than consideration of the terms of the competition as  outlined above.
